CIMT is a safe, non-invasive means of diagnosing the extent of carotid atherosclerotic vascular disease. The test measures the thickness of the two layers of the carotid artery: the intima and media. Early detection may indicate the need for a more agressive approach to managing the risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke. These approaches may include prescribing blood pressure and cholesterol lowering medications and aspirin, as well as encourage lifestyle and dietary improvements.
