Los Angeles Biomedical Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (CVCT) Core Laboratory

The L.A. BioMed CVCT Core Lab is an independent facility dedicated to providing the highest quality services for cardiovascular imaging. This imaging center was started in 1990 for CVCT, and has evaluated over 100,000 cardiac CT studies, both clinically and in research studies. The Cardiovascular CT Core Laboratory is an academic cardiovascular imaging Core Lab which provides internationally recognized expertise in an efficient and responsive environment, to provide both design of CT based trials, as well as interpretation and quality assurance. This operates as a Data Management facility capable of handling administrative and scientific aspects of large multicenter trials compliant with NIH/FDA regulations, and can provide high-level qualitative and quantitative analysis of cardiovascular CT data sets. We have to date, provided core cardiac CT services for over 20 NIH or CDC-sponsored clinical trials, as well as at least a like number of industry sponsored studies. This lab is unparalleled in its ability to assisting with data analysis and interpretation, present results to the medical community and education the regulatory agencies regarding study results.

We also provide both clinical teleradiology services for CVCT (primary or overread services) as well as advanced cardiology or radiology training in both peripheral and cardiac CT imaging.

Our mission is to:

  • Provide high level interactive services with the sponsor and imaging centers to ensure compliance with protocols and quality assurance
  • Provide an imaging laboratory capable of both human and large animal models
  • Design and facilitate industry- and federally-funded trials in compliance with FDA regulations
  • Provide qualitative and quantitative assessment of CT datasets for diagnosis of coronary calcium, non-calcific atherosclerotic plaque and stenosis, as well as global and regional LV function, mass, volumes and aortic measures
  • Provide high-quality teleradiology services
  • Provide a unique environment with all-physician based interpretations of all CT data, with cumulatively over 100 years of cardiac CT experience
  • Foster the development of new assessment tools, and clinical validation of existing tools

Cardiac CT:

Under the direction of Matthew Budoff, MD, with assistance by Robert Detrano MD, PhD, Ronald Oudiz MD and Jina Chung MD, we have cumulatively published over 350 articles related to cardiac CT as well as 3 textbooks.

Dr. Budoff is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and is the Director of Cardiac CT at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. Dr. Budoff is a graduate of the University of California at Riverside and received his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, as well as his cardiology fellowship, at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Budoff is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He is the President of the Society of Atherosclerosis Imaging and Prevention (SAI-P) and a founding Board Member of the Society of Cardiovascular CT (SCCT). Previously, he served as chair of: the ACC/AHA Competency document for cardiac CT and MR; the COCATS 2 – CT Section (ACC training for fellows); as well as a recent AHA Scientific Statement on Cardiac CT; and is an author of the Guidelines for Use of CT for Calcium Assessment and the competency guidelines for peripheral CT and MR. He has edited 3 textbooks on Cardiac CT. He is on the board of both the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association for Southern California.

Dr. Budoff has conducted extensive research over the last 15 years using cardiac CT to identify those patients at high-risk for cardiac events, progression of coronary calcium, and non-invasive CT angiography. He has published over 250 articles, book chapters and books on these topics.

Dr. Budoff has published hundreds of abstracts and original reports in such well-regarded journals as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, Radiology, American Journal of Cardiology, American Heart Journal, and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
